What causes potholes or sinkholes in a driveway?
One cause could be a shifted old culvert. The photo below shows how the water from the surface enters the pipe where these old concrete sections meet. This caused a hole in the road that could never be fixed. Removing this culvert and replacing with a galvanized metal culvert solved the issue. If you're experiencing other issues, it could be lack of material on the road, or improper grading.

What types of driveway culverts are there?
Although there are many types of pipes used in the construction industry, we generally used a metal galvanized pipe to handle water flow under driveways and roads.
Culvert pipe sizes vary greatly, mainly because there are some pretty large culvert pipes made to accommodate outrageous amounts of water. We don't generally use the really big ones for paving.
The most common residential paving culvert sizes are 12" and 18" for paving projects here in Texas.

PVC DRAINAGE PIPES: We also use a schedule 40 PVC pipe in instances where we just need a small amount of water to cross under a drive. This is most common in instances where homeowners have a driveway loop. We use this in instances where the water in the center can go under the drive instead of washing over it.
BACKFILL: In order to get water to flow away from driveways, we can use various types of dirt to backfill up to driveways for protection and to get the water to flow correctly.
The photo above illustrates how we can backfill properties with dirt to keep the driveway protected and improve water flow into property flow lines.
So, if you're in Collin County, Denton County, or Grayson County, just complete the online request form and tell us what you have going on out there. We'll make fixing your water issues as simple as possible.
