Recycled Asphalt
Recycled Asphalt Video: 1:49 - This video is a good starting point for understanding how Recycled Asphalt can be used on driveways & roads.
Recycled Asphalt (also referred to as crushed asphalt) is the ultimate solution for North Texas & Country Roads is the leader when it comes to installation!
Yes, we like all things 'country' here in Texas, but our roads take a beating! Our gravel roads have a lot of dust and mud, but recycled asphalt can be a game changer. Here's an closeup of what it looks like. The benefits and more info follow:

What is Recycled Asphalt?
Former roadways and temporary construction roads are milled and delivered to asphalt plants for processing. They crush the asphalt into small pieces and offer it for sale or use it to make new hot mix asphalt. We purchase it for use as a top-coat and it is brought in with a dump truck for paving.

Benefits: Why does it work so well in Texas?
Because it holds up! Recycled Asphalt, although a cold granular, tends to pack well and hardens over time. Texas is perfect for this curing process because of our heat and humidity. The tar in the asphalt does not wash off over time, so it retains much of its original properties. In fact, asphalt plants use a percentage of recycled asphalt to make new hot mix asphalt. The studies have all been done and recycling asphalt is a government approved standard. That tells us its strong!
We use it in the field every day... cars, trailers, and heavy trucks bear down on the residential and commercial projects we've installed and it holds up. In the event that soil movement or other damage occurs over time, it can be added to. This means that a few shovels full here and there could fix issues down the road. Maintenance with recycled asphalt is not as demanding as other paving methods.
Here's why recycled asphalt is awesome in Texas:
• Negligible dust
• Reduces the likelihood of mud
• Super Strong
• Hardens over time
• Low maintenance

What types of projects can I use it for?
We use it on both residential and commercial paving projects! Here's what we pave for the different customers listed here:
Residential Customers pave rural driveways, make additional parking spots for cars, boats, RV's, etc. Homeowners can make walking paths or sidewalks with it as well. We pave inside outbuildings, covered parking, carports and shop floors with it as well.
HOA's, Rancher's and Farmers pave neighborhood roads, ranch roads, long stretches, make additional parking spots and add parking lots. It’s also a perfect choice under barns, sheds, and metal buildings. It makes for a good top coat at entries as well, and is an approved aggregate for most counties for putting around and over culverts!
Commercial Customers & Contractors use recycled asphalt for parking lots, sidewalks, and under covered parking. We pave storage units and mixed use areas with it (perhaps where trailers or equipment is stored), and we have even had success striping it (recycled asphalt striping photo). Contractors improve construction approaches with recycled asphalt as well.
Unique Uses have also been discovered. Take a look at this back yard fire pit we installed. We even paved an airplane hangar!

Is it affordable?
Yes! One of the best things about Recycled asphalt is that the price is comparable to gravel and the uses are very similar. So, If you're considering gravel, perhaps a top layer of recycled asphalt would offer a dust, and mud-free addition!

Where can I get Recycled Asphalt near me?
Recycled asphalt is available in all areas if the country as far as we know, but as a homeowner it may not be easy to find without contacting a paving company. Even when found, it may be chunky millings, not the finer stuff we use.
Asphalt plants generally sell to paving companies that have accounts set up and such, but you can always try your luck and search online or make some calls before you hire a paving company. Keep in mind, if that works out, it will very likely be dumped in a pile. You will need to spread and compact it so make sure to ask about delivery and installation before you schedule if you're not using Country Roads Paving.
If you're in North Texas, we can make arrangements for deliveries of the 'good stuff' with or without installation. Contact us.

Are there different types of Recycled Asphalt?
You can get a raw version that has not been processed. It is usually called 'millings' and we've found it very difficult to work with because of the size and number of larger chunks. You can expect the price to be lower because of the the lack of processing.
The more processed versions would be 'screened' or 'crushed'. These will be easier to work with and will usually look better because they contain only smaller pieces, but it costs a bit more because of processing.
We generally use a very fine 'double-crushed' version for most projects which is easier to evenly apply, and looks great. In the end, it really depends where you get your recycled asphalt from and what they have available. If you're in North Texas, you can have Recycled Asphalt made to any specifications by contacting us.

What can Recycled Asphalt be paved over?
Recycled asphalt is best paved over gravel roads, but it can go over old asphalt as well. It does not perform well over clay, mud, or dirt. We don't usually put it over concrete, either.

Can I do it myself?
Perhaps. As with any larger home improvement project, you have to weigh the cost difference and determine if you want to spend the time on educating yourself, getting the proper equipment, and actually doing the work right. A good comparison would be cleaning a chimney, painting the exterior of your house, shingling your roof, or putting in new windows - all things you could potentially handle, but don't want to do the wrong way. These things are hard enough for professionals who have the right equipment and trained staff, but it can be overwhelming for DIY homeowners. Generally, even a DIY'er will hire a roofer because the time involved, the safety concerns, and the work itself does not really pencil out for an individual to save enough to make it worth doing themselves.
The other reason is that it can be difficult to recognize the challenges with paving projects when its your own driveway. Ultimately, mistakes with paving can are costly and professionals mitigate that risk. Having said that though, if you choose to do this yourself, we can get you a delivery of recycled asphalt if you're in our work area.

Can any paving company install Recycled Asphalt?
Most paving companies should be able to install recycled asphalt. They may not be experts at it, but they can likely do it. It's hard for us to predict if the final product would look like ours though. We install recycled asphalt so frequently, we've become a 'go-to' here in Texas because of it. We first look for any challenges and address them, prep areas properly, spray a soil neutralizer if applicable, lay the recycled asphalt carefully with a paving machine, and finally compact with a roller for a finished look.

Does Recycled Asphalt Hold Up?
Yes! If properly installed, it should stay in place and hold up! It does require a road base to work properly and there are instances where heavy rains can wash it, similar to any other semi-porous material so check with a paving company, and be concerned about areas where heavy water flow or standing water occur. The material can get potholes over time in certain cases so maintenance may be required (see maintenance line below).

Is it a green product?
Yes! It is a 'green product' because it is 100% recycled material.

Can it be treated to harden up faster?
Yes! We have an asphalt emulsion we can spray on the top to encourage it to harden up. The goal really is to help it turn back into a tightly-packed hot mix asphalt road, this happens with humidity, heat, and time on its own. We can help that process along. The spray looks like this when applied and then gets worked in over time.

What sort of maintenance can I expect from Recycled Asphalt?
Recycled asphalt is prone to the same wear and tear as other paving methods in that it can be affected by underlying soil conditions, expansion and contraction, heavy vehicles, standing water, etc. If it ever needs maintenance, adding more recycled asphalt to the top may just do the trick. If the issues are related to the underlying soil, the damaged area may have to be removed and replaced as with any paving method. Generally speaking though, re-grading the road by adding some fresh material is what we see as the most common maintenance solution.

What does Recycled Asphalt cost?
Although it is very tempting to post costs here, it confuses the issue more than making it more understandable. We can price things a few different ways depending on the situation, meaning that it can be a turn-key driveway, a stand-alone material delivery, or an open-ended quote based on time. We prefer turn-key, but we can dive into numbers in person or on the phone. Just contact us and we'll answer anything we can.
